| Description: | The goal of the project was to reduce the incidence of child marriage during the acute and recovery phases of COVID-19 in Zaka district. To achieve this, the project adopted a multi-sectoral approach, focusing on girls’ empowerment and addressing deeply entrenched social norms, economic drivers, and policy changes to protect girls from child marriage during and after the COVID-19 crisis. The project achieved the following results:
· Result 1: 200 vulnerable girls increased their economic resilience through support in poultry production and Income Savings and Lending Schemes (ISALS). · Result 2: 3,400 girls and young women gained increased agency in decisions related to marriage, raising their voices against the harmful tradition. · Result 3: 8,974 wider community members increased their knowledge of the harmful effects of child marriage, transforming attitudes and behaviours towards the girl child. · Result 4: 40 gender champions developed the capacity to lobby and advocate for the enforcement of laws and policies that protect girls against child marriage. · Result 5: Local government sustained social accountability efforts in addressing child marriage, placing girls’ rights on the COVID-19 agenda and integrating them into Disaster Risk Management Policies and Strategies. This enhanced legal and multi-sectoral policy frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to protect the rights of the girl child. |
